Android assault on continuous iPhone market

Apple shipped an impressive iPhone to 16.9 million in the first three months of this year, according to Gartner. The downside for Apple, however, is that 36.2 million on Android smartphones shipped in the first quarter - up of 8.36 million units a year earlier.

Abrupt rise of Android suggests that Apple dock on the position of leader in the field of smartphone applications is slippery. If history is any indication, however, Apple can begin offering the iPhone 4 discounted after that the new iPhone 5 launches later this year, noted Gartner Research Vice President Carolina Milanesi.

"Apple dropped the price of the previous when generation apparatus the new launched so I would expect this time a similar trend," Milanesi said in an e-mail Friday. "It will depend on what improvements [iPhone 5] we will see how much discount, we will see on the iPhone 4 and in fact if the 3GS will continue to ship."

LTE dormant

Still, Apple will have to do more to prevent the sinking possibly by a surprising growth of the Android, which increased by 36%-year walking ending the quarter. However, Apple iPhone shipments grew up 16.8% growth during the same period, according to Gartner.

Earlier this month, Google said that activation of more than 400,000 phones Android-based on a daily basis and with more than 100 million devices based on the Google mobile platform already in play. Android market is also growing. More than 200,000 free and paid applications were available in the Android Market as of May 10, with more than $ 4.5 billion applications already installed on handsets around the world.

LTE continuous transition of the wireless industry is an issue that threat which gives Android makers combined potential advantage. According to Piper Jaffray, LTE modems currently consume far too much energy to meet the requirements of Apple battery life and are therefore "not likely to be in the next iPhone," noted analysts of Cabinet Gene Munster and Andrew Murphy in a note published Thursday.

Still, Apple has expressed no sense of urgency when the subject came in the company with investors conference call last month. "The first generation LTE chipsets force many compromise of design with the handset and some people, we are simply not prepared to do", said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Launch of the iPhone delayed 5

Postponing the launch of iPhone Apple 5 of the usual release date early June gives decision-makers on Android combined the opportunity to market short term gains at the expense of Apple. Piper Jaffray expected Apple to sell 16 iPhone million during the quarter end of June, compared to the iPhone of Apple 16.9 million in the prior quarter, according to Gartner.

Piper Jaffray believes that Apple shipped its fifth generation iPhone until the end of quarter of the end of September. "We recently spoke with an equipment manufacturing iPhone supplier indicating that orders for new equipment are just a few months later than usual", wrote the Munster and Murphy.

Earlier this week, Gartner noted that a bump of 13 million units in the world combined inventories took place in April because of an overstocking of the channel in response to the earthquake and the tsunami that struck the Japan, which "has caused an initial panic on shortages" Milanesi observed. However, this happened to "Japan does not appear to have had an impact on Apple", said Milanesi.

Still, Piper Jaffray believe that it is possible that supply issues related to the earthquake and tsunami of the Japan had affected equipment from Apple for iPhone ramp 5. Alternatively, dithering on whether to support LTE or add a socket audio codec could contribute to the delay and deal with software-based features are "fully cooked" step in time to permit normal output in June. However, analysts have added, "we have no concrete idea on which one or a group of these reasons caused the slip."
