Bad news for Blackberry's RIM: a recent survey of users of cellular phone shows Google's Android continues to gobble up its market share.
In online forums, consumers cite the superior user experience by the Android, the wide selection of carriers and handsets that offer of its operating system and its range of innovative applications as reasons why they migrate to Google.
These feelings are highlighted by the latest MobiLens survey, more difficult spelling for Blackberry, which has been falling for some time. The investigation aims to identify trends in the industry of mobile telephony to the United States by over 30,000 users to vote.
In January, Blackberry lost its number one position long in the classification for Google's Android MobiLens. At this time there Blackberry held 30.4% of the common market, less than 1 percentage point behind Android to 31.2%.
The most recent comScore MobiLens survey in March shows part of the Blackberry has fallen to 27.1% and Google opened its advance of almost 8 percentage points, grabbing market share 34.7.
This means that more than a third of all smartphone devices used in the United States now run Android.
In some respects, Android has adopted the same position on the smartphone as Windows occupies on the desktop, it has become the default platform for equipment to use suppliers who do not want to go with proprietary software development costs.
This does not mean people are necessarily opting for Android as their preferred choice. Because Android is used by the majority of manufacturers of different smartphone, the growth of its user base is probably just an indication that the smartphone market is growing.
MobiLens data correspond to the recent figures published by Canalys research firm, which is the part of the Android to 35%, although data from Nielsen puts Android even higher at about 50 percent of the market.
Microsoft and Palm has also seen modest decline share of the market since January, MobiLens survey. Microsoft fell by half a percentage point, while Palm fell by 0.4 percentage point. Microsoft will be dismayed as customers vote with their wallets with respect to the product Windows Phone 7 launched end of last year.
On the reverse: after a slight slip in January, the market share of Apple continued a slow but constant growth rates. The launch of the iPhone on Verizon could be helping, with the fact transactions involving maturation iPhone 3GS combined become more competitive for the arrival of the iPhone 5 more later this year. It will be interesting to see if the published White iPhone recently significantly enhances the number of Apple.
The real winner is Google's Android, which is the rest of the field in the dust.
MobiLens figures for the last six months are look like Android is sucking-up disgruntled Blackberry users. The market share of other platforms held more or less stable apart from slight growth or declines, so it is unlikely that they are responsible for the misfortune of RIM.
