NEW YORK - Barnes & Noble Tuesday unveiled a new version lightened its book player electronic corner with a touch screen, life long month battery and a price equal to Kindle mid-line of Amazon.com.
The drive Simple touch featuring a touch screen of six inches, black and white was available to be ordered online at nook.com for $139 and begin shipping June 10.
"Touch makes it simple to use, and the compact design beautifully renders the more portable eReader in its class," Barnes & Noble Chief Executive William Lynch said in a news release.
"Add to this a battery life unmatched, document-like touch display more advanced on the market and access wireless greatest digital Bookstore in the world.".
The corner has been billed as suitable for readers and not vaunted as a challenge to like iPads tablet computers, which are platforms for navigation, games, videos and more electronic books.
Barnes & Noble claimed to have captured 25 percent of the market for digital books since the launch of the first model of corner about 18 months ago.
Simple reader Touch weighed at 7.48 ounces (212 grams), lighter than a typical Pocket novel and has been described as easy fit in a jacket pocket or purse, while being able to accommodate up to 1,000 digital books.
The new corner debut five days after the bookseller struggling U.S. said that Liberty Media has offered to buy the company for $17 per share in cash, valuing the retailer for approximately $ 1 billion.
The bid would give the media conglomerate controlled by Tycoon John Malone, a new company to go with its Starz movie channel, QVC shopping network issues in the Expedia Travel Web site and other media assets.
Barnes & Noble calls itself largest bookseller in the world, with 705 bookstores in 50 States.
But the book company was hammered by a displacement of electronic books and Internet sales.
Borders, the second most large U.S. bookstore chain, has declared bankruptcy in February and is still undergoing restructuring.
