Apple CEO Steve Jobs could have on something when he said that "PC will be like trucks," as some Tablet owners are reportedly leave their PCs gather dust.
According to Nielsen, 35% of tablet PC owners say they use the computer less often than before, or not at all. The percentage of Tablet owners who use their laptops "less often or not at all" is 32%.
This means that the majority of Tablet owners use their PC as much or more than in the past, but I think that there is a little more to this story. In the survey of Nielsen, 77% of the owners of the Tablet say they use the device in ways for which they are already turning to a laptop or desktop, which suggests that people replace the use of the use of Tablet PC more as they leave. Either that or tablets have forced people to use their computers more than ever before.
Note that I can say that the iPad has replaced but my laptop for almost all of the work. When Friday afternoon rolls around, it is not uncommon for me to leave the laptop off the coast until Monday morning. The Tablet is more convenient to read e-mail, Twitter and navigation on the Web - the kind of things, check that I am inclined to do evenings and weekends. In this sense, jobs is right. The Tablet portability and ease of use makes the vehicle of choice for basic tasks.
Still, I do not think that his analogy is impeccable. Comparison of the PC to trucks, as did the Conference of all things d by 2010 implies that most people do own PC. In the foreseeable future, it is quite a stretch. Laptops and desktop computers Excel by typing, pointing, cut, paste and multitasking. Things you take for granted on a PC, such as highlighting a piece of text, a picture of resizing or watch two application windows side-by-side, are a chore (or even impossible) on the shelves. Even if I didn't use my laptop for work, I want to would not be stuck without one. I cannot say the same thing on a truck.
