BEIJING- China announced a new Office of Information of the Internet of State Wednesday to unify organizations is chamailleurs who supervise the Chinese Internet, which Beijing sees as a potential gold mine and a political threat.
The Internet Information Office State appears designed to help improve the coordination and the rivalry between the dozen or more departments of the Chinese Government and organizations who have an interest in the Internet. It will be based in the Information Office of the State Council, propaganda of the Government and information arm.
Chinese authorities have long been concerned that the Internet could become a channel threatening for images and politically unacceptable ideas. The Government has intensified censorship these last months, fearing calls for protests inspired by uprisings in the Middle East and the North Africa online.
Internet in China, with a greater number of users - more than 450 million world, is also an industry booming, attracting investors and Government agencies in the hope of a participation in revenues online licensing and regulation. That has bred poor coordination and even open rivalry between regulators.

The announcement left unclear what formal authority of the new Office would have on other departments and agencies, including the Ministry of industry and Information technology.
Senior executives who will work at the same time in the Office while keeping the other posts will include his boss Wang Chen, also the Director of the Information Office of the Council state and Zhang Xinfeng, a Vice Minister of public safety.
The new Office will also have a role in the Web sites and domain names registration and distribute IP addresses.
Companies in the Chinese Internet such as Baidu Inc. and Youku saw their stocks increase by more than 50 percent this year as U.S. investors betting on the growth of the Chinese Internet.
Renren Inc., one of the biggest social networks China, priced at the upper part of the expected range for an initial public offer, the insurer said Wednesday.
