Microsoft: Glitch anti-piracy led replacements for Xbox 360

Microsoft said Thursday that it replaces an unspecified number of older Xbox 360 consoles due to a disk failure related to the capacity of the console to block counterfeit games, said a spokesman for the company.

The issue surfaced Wednesday, when Microsoft says that it replaced a small number of old Xbox 360 consoles with the latest version of the console and a year subscription to Xbox Live.

Users did not have complained of problems with the console. In fact, user Avery said Penn industry blog Kotaku her "jaw hit the floor" after reading the email from Microsoft, which he posted as a screenshot, because Microsoft has apparently detected the issue with its console before it even took place. Microsoft has said that he could detect a way not the issue through its online, Xbox Live service.

Later, Microsoft confirmed the report via Twitter as well.

Kotaku have speculated that the problem was related to an update to come which reflashes DVD drive in the Xbox 360 to a new firmware stock and adds support for the new format of disk XGD3, which itself allows an additional gigabyte of storage disk on Xbox discs. But Microsoft denied that in an exchange of e-mail Thursday.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we are aware of a problem that prevents a very small number of Xbox 360 owners to play game discs to retail," Microsoft said in a statement sent Thursday. This problem manifests as a unique "unreadable disc" or a "disk not supported" error on the screen and is not related to our public beta version of the latter. We are also able to detect this problem on Xbox LIVE and proactively soft clients who may be affected in replacement of their console. The owners of Xbox 360 receiving this error are encouraged to contact us at www.xbox.com/support/contact so that we can check if the console was affected.

"Disk read error message is related to a change in disk algorithms in a recent software update and is not specific to older or more recent Xbox 360 versions," said Microsoft.

When asked for more details, the representative of Microsoft said that it could not. "We are not disclosing the details of the issue as it impacts on a subsystem designed to thwart the use of counterfeit games," she said in a follow-up email. "After we have audited if the client console is affected, we take care of customers by their consoles by replacing with a new GB of Xbox 360 S 250, as well as giving them a one year subscription to Xbox Live for the inconvenience.".

Microsoft replaces the old consoles with the Xbox 360 S (marketed as the Xbox 360) the updating of the Microsoft console began shipping in March of last year. It includes a 250 GB hard drive, integrated 802. .11n ready, digital audio and a total of 5 USB connectors. Penn owned a 60 GB Xbox 2009 Pro model, Kotaku reported.

The next update of the Xbox 360 will be also added PayPal support and an auto-standby function that will start after one hour of downtime, Microsoft said Thursday. The update will be rolling around the world in the coming weeks.
