National set of launch (PA) emergency alert system

WASHINGTON - a national system that will send emergency alerts to cell phones is set to begin in Washington and New York City at the end of the year.

The Federal Commission Communications and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Monday that the system warn people about the attacks, natural disasters or other emergency situations.

Starting next year all new phones must have a chip that receives alerts. Some smart phones already have the technology. Individuals may withdraw from some alerts, such as missing children amber alerts.

The alert system will send emergency messages, even if the other voice services or cell phone text does not work. It should be put in place in cities across the country at the end of next year.
